The Tonkinese is the ideal cat since it has the qualities gathered by the Burmese and the Siamese, from which it is the descendant. He is therefore very attached to his master, very endearing, in perpetual demand for cuddles and attention. He is lively, active, playful and has a very good spirit to share with other animals and congeners. He has an iron health and simply has to live in conditions that respect his daily physical demands.
Breed History
The Tonkinese is a fairly old breed originating from Thailand, which has survived the centuries. It comes straight from the interbreeding between 2 other very famous breeds: the Siamese and the Burmese. He inherits the qualities of the latter, which makes him an exceptional cat, both for his physical appearance and for his character.
Initially, the Tonkinese was defined solely for its color of coat, with splendid gradations. We only kept the Tonkinese under this name if he had aquamarine eyes. Nevertheless, given the difficulty of the task, the standard opened up to those with blue eyes like the Siamese as well as those of amber color like the Burmese. The breed is well known across the Atlantic, in Canada and the United States, but still quite rare in Europe and France.
Physical peculiarities
His body: The Tonkinese has a body that is both athletic and robust, like his musculature. In any case, it is described as balanced, slender. His frame is fine. He is at a medium height.
His hair: The Tonkinese comes in 2 varieties depending on his hair. The short-haired one who is endowed with a remarkable finesse and whose coat is particularly silky. The long-haired one, also fine and silky, but also lying on the body.
Its color: The Tonkinese standard only accepts 3 patterns, namely the colorpoint with a fairly significant contrast between the color of the body and that of the extremities, mink and sepia. The contrast is intermediate on the first while it is very little visible for sepia. It is also possible to meet Tonkinese of other colors such as lilac mink or chocolate.
His head: It is longer than it is wide. It looks like a triangle with softened ends. We recognize it by that.
His eyes: They are large and almond-shaped (typical of Asian cats), blue or amber in color.
His ears: They are quite large, slightly tilted forward even if they remain straight on the head and placed at equal distance.
Its tail: It is of medium size and its end is slightly rounded.
